A Deep Dive into an Unprecedented Marine Science Achievement

Since the 1980s, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has operated as the NASA of deep-sea research. The research organization in Monterey County, CA continues to shape our understanding of the world’s underbelly, yet, its greatest achievement may be an exhibition it debuted in April 2022 at the globally-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Long seen as impossible, MBARI and the Aquarium worked for five years to develop cutting-edge technology that allows creatures that live at depths of thousands of feet to be displayed, alive, in an Aquarium space. Many of the animals on display have never been observed beyond video footage. The exhibition has attracted marveling marine scientists from across the globe.
